Program Overview

Career Preparation — To ensure you are properly prepared to engage across the broad range of opportunities in civil engineering, you will undertake courses to develop knowledge and skills across a variety of civil engineering topics including:

Construction Engineering and Project Management
Materials Testing and Design
Environmental Engineering, Water Treatment, and Air Pollution Management
Geotechnical Engineering
Structural Analysis and Design with Steel, Concrete, and Wood
Transportation Engineering
Water Distribution and Hydrology

During your junior and senior years, you will develop specialized technical skills in a specific subdiscipline of civil engineering through your selection of one of five civil engineering concentrations:

Environmental Engineering
General Civil Engineering
International Infrastructure Engineering
Structural Engineering
Water Resources Engineering

Accreditation — Our BSCE program is accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission of ABET, http://www.abet.org, under the commission’s General Criteria and Program Criteria for Civil and Similarly Named Engineering Programs. View our Program Educational Objectives and Student Outcomes.

Labs and Projects — Our program has been specifically designed to incorporate lab and project experiences across the curriculum. From building a 30-ft. wooden bridge as a freshman, designing and testing your own concrete mix, or configuring a functional water purification system, our whole program is designed to have you in the lab applying the concepts and theories you’re learning in class. As you do this, you will also be developing practical skills and experience to give you the competitive edge when you graduate. In Fall 2020, the new Cedarville University Civil Engineering Center (CEC) was opened. This 22,000 square foot, state-of-the-art facility has been specifically designed around our hands-on approach to civil engineering.

Mentoring Faculty — Not only will your professors teach your classes, but they will also mentor and guide you as you progress through our program and out into the profession. Our professors are all committed Christians, who see their role as a calling from God, and recognize that great education extends beyond the classroom into all spheres of life. Our faculty and support staff are well-equipped to lead you through the deepest technical aspects of civil engineering, work alongside you on designs and projects, and provide you with sound spiritual, academic, and professional advising.

Real-World Experience — Through laboratory experiences, design competitions, and internships, you will gain valuable real-world experience as you pursue your engineering degree.

As you’re pursuing a civil engineering degree at Cedarville, your education will be complemented by co-curricular opportunities.

Internships — Our students have found that there’s no substitution for real-world experience. A summer internship will see you employed with a civil engineering firm, doing real work in civil engineering and getting paid for it! Our civil engineering students have already completed internships at a range of civil engineering, structural engineering, construction management, surveying, and ministry organizations across Ohio and the U.S.

Competitions — Cedarville engineering students participate in many design competitions sponsored by national and international organizations such as the American Society for Engineering Education (ASEE), the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME), SAE International, NASA, the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE), the Department of Energy (DOE), and the Ohio Society of Professional Engineers (OSPE). Co-op Program — When participating in the co-op program, you will begin earning a salary while still in college, gain professional experience, make great networking connections, and more. View our co-op handbook.

Student Organizations — You will be encouraged to become an active member of one or more of our national and international professional societies. They organize meetings, promote tours of industry, travel to regional conferences, and rub elbows with professionals at senior section meetings.

Cedarville University Society of Civil Engineers (CUSCE) – This society is intended to develop into a student chapter of the American Society of Civil Engineers. This society involves monthly meetings where civil engineering students and faculty share dinner and hear a presentation from a practicing civil engineering professional.
Society of Women Engineers (SWE) – Society for Women Engineers is an organization that stimulates women to achieve full potential in careers as engineers and leaders.
The Society of Engineers Aiding Missions (SEAM) – SEAM’s mission is to educate, equip, and engage engineers in the cause of world missions.
Tau Beta Pi Engineering Honor Society – Tau Beta Alpha is a Cedarville University Engineering Honor Society, which recognizes junior and senior engineering majors for outstanding scholastic achievement combined with a strong Christian character.

In a remarkable journey shaped by a childhood missions trip to Guatemala, Brianna Pacecca discovered her passion for sharing the gospel and providing clean water to those in need.
